What the Traffic Crew Does
Our shows draw a lot of cars onto a single residential block, and without a plan that block turns into a nose-to-nose standoff - drivers meeting in the middle with nowhere to go, horns going off, and neighbors unable to reach their own driveways. The Traffic Crew exists to make sure that never happens.
During show hours we manage 47th Ave SW between SW Dakota St and SW Andover St as a one-way street with restricted access. Here is how it works:
- We post Closed and One Way signs at both ends of the block
- A team of two volunteers stands at each end, directing traffic and keeping the flow moving in a single direction
- Traffic is restricted to residents of the block, who always keep access to their homes and driveways
- Visitors are directed to park a block or two away and walk in, which is what we ask of everyone anyway
The payoff is a block that stays calm. No snarls, no honking, no frustrated drivers stuck in a jam they cannot back out of - and our neighbors keep the street parking in front of their own houses. That goodwill is the reason we get to keep doing this every year.
Your Gear & Safety
You will never be out there in the dark without the right equipment. Every volunteer is issued:
- A high-visibility vest so you are seen from well down the block
- A two-way radio to stay in contact with the team at the other end and with us at the house
- A traffic cone flashlight for clearly signalling drivers after dark
You will always be working in a pair, never alone, and there is always someone at the house on the radio. We will walk you through everything on your first shift - no experience needed, just a friendly attitude and a willingness to stand outside in Seattle weather.
Please read our Event Safety & Liability page before your first shift.
Shifts
Most shifts run a couple of hours, and you are welcome to sign up for as many or as few nights as you like - even one night helps enormously. Pick the dates below that work for you and we will follow up to confirm before the season starts.
Start and end times shift a little on our special nights (All Hallows Eve and New Year's Eve run later than usual). We will always confirm the exact times with you ahead of the night.
